Chapter 11

Do what excites you

“People always ask you, ‘What’s your dream job?’ This is my dream job. It really is a dream opportunity to have your own nationwide daily sports talk show for an hour.”

-Adam Schein

W hen I was little, I participated in a school competition where we got to come up with inventions. To me, this was the most exciting activity in the world at the time because it challenged me in a whole new way that math and history class couldn’t even come close to. I was forced to come up with something out of nothing. I was challenged to create a new way of doing something. My invention wasn’t life changing, and it certainly didn’t take off, but for your typical second grader, it was the thrill of doing something groundbreaking that was exciting to me. This is my first memory of really getting excited about doing work. This desire to invent things has stayed with me to this day. I have over a dozen inventions and apps that I have conceptualized and I’m always trying to get one of them off the ground.

I have found over the years that I get excited about solving problems, managing logistics, and being involved in groundbreaking projects. I get excited about starting a new project and bringing it to life. Film is the perfect career for me because it is always changing and the challenges are constantly new. Every new film I work on is essentially a new startup company that has a new set of founders, employees, and its own unique story.

Think back to when you were little and what got you energized. Does that event or thing have any way of helping inform your decision to pursue a certain type of career? If you like consistency and if you like learning, then being a teacher may be a good fit for you. If you like the idea of helping people and listening to problems, then being a counselor might be your thing.

The formula is simple:

Step 1:

Figure out what excites you.

Step 2:

Take this excitement and see what careers fall into this area.

Step 3:

Do that career.

Now, I may be oversimplifying things, but I can guarantee that people who love what they do can trace this love back to a moment in their youth that got them excited about that type of work. It’s interesting how our earliest childhood memories can be so influential later in life. One minute you might be playing with Nerf guns in the backyard, and the next minute you are enrolling in the Army. That’s what’s so great about growing up—you learn about life through play.

As a kid, there is no such thing as work other than the chores your parents force on you and the homework you have from school. Every free moment as a kid is dedicated to “play.” Play is this idea that you can dream, create, make-believe, compete, or build something incredible.

Every part of play can be traced to a feeling that you resonate with.
